Cossatot River State Park-Natural Area

When serious rafters want a thrilling white water adventure, they visit Cossatot River State Park-Natural Area, located just south of Mena, Arkansas. Lying across 12 miles of the Cossatot River, which translates as "skull crusher," this river features an area nicknamed the "washing machine" because it frequently pulls floaters in and under, rotating them in a spinning motion similar to a washing machine.
For expert rafters and canoers only
The Cossatot river forms Cossatot Falls, a rocky and ridged canyon that entices experienced canoeists and kayakers throughout the country. During times of significant precipitation, water levels rise to create rapids of Class IV and V levels. There is even a 1/3-mile area that features a 33-foot drop in elevation. Peak season is late winter to early spring, when white water reaches Class III to V levels and is suggested for expert paddlers only.
Campsites and amenities
Brushy Creek Recreation Area, located at the Highway 246 bridge, provides visitors with an above river walkway, picnic sites, nature trail and restrooms. Seven tent sites are located along the river, costing $9.75 daily during the winter and $13 a day for the rest of the year. The 14-mile River Corridor Trail and the 3.5-mile Harris Creek Trail offer hiking enthusiasts an alternative to white water rafting. The park also features a 15,000-square foot information/education building that features an exhibit gallery, two classroom/labs and an area for viewing the wildlife that live in this protected natural setting.
Expert white water paddlers find the Cossatot River State Park-Natural Area a challenging and exciting adventure. It is a premier destination for experienced canoeists and kayakers who are looking to ride the fastest and most turbulent rapids around.
