Lower White River Museum State Park

Arkansas is known for its beautiful prairies and grass that resembles an ocean when the wind is blowing. Rivers criss-cross the scenery and portray a spiderweb of beauty. Among this exhilarating landscape is the Lower White River Museum State Park. It is located in the north eastern part of Arkansas in Des Arc. The museum is there to honor the history of Arkansas early foundation.

History

The only reason the town of Des Arc is still standing is because of the White River including many other towns near the river banks. Steamboats went down the rivers and brought trade to the areas. On top of that, there was a lot of fish and mussels in the water to provide food. Lastly, the mussel shells were turned into buttons which created another industry in the area. It slowly became a major trading post and was prosperous because of it. In present times, the river is not used for transporting people that often, but it is used for transporting crops.

Exhibits

The exhibits change quite often as they are themed on different parts of Arkansas history. There are trails nearby for hiking and/or tours. You can also go bird watching, looking for other wildlife or geocaching, which is where people hide objects and upload the GPS coordinates to a website and you can go out and look for them.

The park also provides a range of amenities such as bathrooms, campsites, cabins and lodges.
