The history of Petit Jean State Park dates back to before white settlers were even in the United States. In the park are bluff shelters that have housed Native Americans for over a thousand years. There are cave paintings that you can view when visiting these sites. The name of the mountain is somewhat of a legend and has to do with early French exploration in the Americas. It is said that a man was engaged to a woman who wanted to come to explore with him. He would not let her so she disguised herself as a cabin boy and applied to be on the ship. There she stayed and explored with him without his knowing until the final day she became ill and died. She was buried on the mountain and it was given the name she took on as a cabin boy, Petit Jean.
