Prairie Grove Battlefield State Park is a large park in Prairie Grove, Arkansas. Prairie Grove is in the Northeast part of the state, closer to Tulsa, Oklahoma than any other major city. The park is best known as a former Civil War battlefield; however, there are plenty of attractions to interest a large variety of people.

History

Prairie Grove battlefield was an important part of the Civil War, and it is one of the better known Civil War landmarks in Arkansas. Even though many do not often think of Arkansas when remembering turning points in the war, Arkansas was a border state and saw heavy fighting.

The battlefield

Since the end of the war, many states have designated former battlefields as historical areas or state parks. Prairie Grove Battlefield State Park is full of local knowledge and information about Civil War battles fought there. Since there is a driving trail and a walking trail, it is possible to experience the scenery in multiple ways. For those who want to learn more, a small museum provides relics and written information about these battles. Each year, Civil War enthusiasts re-enact the Battle of Prairie Grove, helping visitors learn about the battle in an in-your-face manner.

Those who prefer something different can enjoy the Geocache trail at Prairie Grove. This popular activity allows visitors to experience the thrill of a treasure hunt. Picnic tables are also available for those who want to bring a meal to share with family or friends.

Prairie Grove continues to attract many people each year with its focus on history. The park is certainly a must-see location for Civil War enthusiasts passing through the area.
